Carl Nielsen Museum

A radical, “audible” exhibition that celebrates the creativity of Denmark’s most popular composer. A journey through Nielsn’s world of music and sounds, from childhood to maturity, punctuated by his musical instruments, memorabilia, letters and other fragments of his universe. The materiality of wood, brass and black felt evoke a sense of a symphony orchestra on stage, whilst the finely crafted display cabinets add gravitas that is animated by the clever use of graphics and projections. As for the music; it is the protagonist. Flowing in the space as if carried by an overhead river of pulsing lights, it is captured and played back as a fragment at each cabinet, to become the great protagonist of the finale, in a splendid show filled with abstracted lightscapes and Nielsen’s most loved melodies.

“How do you display music? This is the way.”

The head title of the Politiken- a leading Danish newspaper- the day after the museum opening underlines what proved to be the most challenging request by the client and the curatorial team. To display Nielsen’s music with his life as a backdrop- not the other way round. Focusing on the aural meant rethinking the galleries as multi-sensory experiences, creating clear visual hierarchies to de-clutter the scenography and give space to sound. A seamless blend of physical and digital elements structured each of the three immersive rooms, allowing for the flow of the music to guide the visitors in the space.
