David Livingstone Birthplace

In the very building where he was born, this exhibition unwinds David Livingstone’s life, achievements and legacy. Following a red thread famously woven in the local mills, the visitors are taken from the calm, muted tones of the Scottish birthland to the vibrant colours of the African landscapes. The epic story is told through Livingstone’s own words, the reactions of his contemporaries, modern-day art pieces and installations, engaging interactives and moving soundscapes. But most importantly, through the objects the explorer owned, that now take centre stage and anchor the stories onto the spaces.

A challenging marriage of space and storytelling

It has not been easy to confine David Livingstone’s life story within the limited space of the old dwelling. The listed building came with it’s very particular practical considerations, ranging from low ceiling heights to narrow passages, to accessibility obstacles and non-standard building materials. However, having achieved a smooth collaboration with the conservation architects and working closely with the David Livingstone Trust on all matters regarding the narrative and collections, we established an exhibition design language that was strong and distinct, still quite flexible and fluid. With colour being the element that marks each new gallery, the exhibition scenography is simple and subtle, complementing the architectural elements and creating a sense of cosiness and familiarity that allows room for the narrative to unfold.
